JOHANNESBURG – Mercedes-Benz has lifted the covers off their X-Class concept which signals Merc’s entry into the bakkie segment. The X-Class concept comes in two forms, Powerful Adventurer and Stylish Explorer.
The former is for…well the adventurers, bundu bashers and people who like to climb up mountains. It is the more off-road-capable model featuring bigger tyres, more raised ride height and a more rugged exterior. It offers added functionality for attacking the Kalahari and the Drakensberg.

The Stylish Explorers is the more civilised model which sacrifices ruggedness for a more comfortable and luxurious ride. It features huge low-profile wheels and shiny chrome bits all around the massive bakkie.

ensure that their bakkie offers a premium ride over its rivals, the X-Class will feature specially designed suspension with wide five-link rear axles with coil springs. Mercedes-Benz has specially calibrated the dampers set up for maximum comfort both off and on the road.
The X-Class will come with a variety of engines, the top of the range model sporting a high-torque V6 diesel. To ensure you don’t get stuck in the bundu, Merc’s 4MATIC – which combines an electronic traction system and a transfer case with a reduction gear and two differential locks – will be available throughout the range.
The interior of the X-Class will be typical Mercedes with high-quality materials used all round.
The X-Class will arrive in South Africa in the latter stages of 2017.
